Pool Party Outfits for Men That Actually Look Great
Men’s pool party style has one major advantage over women’s: the decision tree is significantly shorter.
Pool party outfits for men that actually look good just need swim trunks, something to wear over them, and footwear that works near water. Done.
The problem is that “short decision tree” doesn’t automatically mean “good decisions.” The men who show up to pool parties looking genuinely sharp have thought about it, even if briefly.
And the ones who show up looking like they grabbed whatever was on the floor have also thought about it approximately that much.

This guide is for the first category. It covers what to wear, what to avoid, and how to put together a pool party outfit that looks like you made an effort — even if the actual effort was five minutes.
What Makes a Good Men’s Pool Party Outfit
Before the specifics, the principle is worth understanding.
A good men’s pool party outfit works in the water, near the water, and away from the water. It looks appropriate whether you’re swimming, eating, playing cornhole, or standing around a drinks table at 5 pm as the afternoon winds down.
It doesn’t require management — no adjusting, no worrying, no changing halfway through the afternoon.
It also photographs well, because pool parties generate a lot of photos, and nobody enjoys a five-hour event followed by a bad image of themselves in it.
With that as the standard, here’s what works.
Swim Trunks: The Only Decision That Actually Matters
Everything else in a man’s pool party outfit is secondary to the swim trunks. Get these right, and the rest is straightforward.
The right length
Mid-thigh is the length that works in 2026 and has worked for some time. Not board-short length, which falls below the knee and reads as dated and heavy when wet. Not too short, which looks like a different era entirely.
Mid-thigh — sitting roughly two to three inches above the knee — is flattering on most builds, comfortable for swimming, and looks appropriate whether you’re in the water or not.
Patterns versus solids
Both work, but they work differently.
A solid-colour trunk in navy, white, coral, olive, or a deep teal is the most versatile option. It goes with any shirt you might wear over it, it photographs cleanly, and it never looks try-hard.
Navy and white are the most reliably good-looking solid trunk colours for a summer party.
A patterned trunk — a subtle stripe, a small geometric, a classic floral — adds personality and requires a little more care in the rest of the outfit. Pair a patterned trunk with a plain shirt and plain shoes.
The trunk is the statement. Nothing else needs to be.
Avoid large, busy prints in clashing colours. The goal is to look like you chose it, not like it chose you.
Fabric and fit
A trunk that fits well at the waist and doesn’t bag out around the seat looks considerably more put-together than one that doesn’t, regardless of the colour or pattern. Look for a trunk with a drawstring that actually works and an internal mesh liner that sits smoothly.
Quick-dry fabric — nylon or polyester blend — is the practical choice for a party where you’ll be alternating between the pool and everything else. A trunk that’s still heavy and wet an hour after you got out becomes uncomfortable fast.
What to avoid
Trunks that fall below the knee. Very tight trunks designed for lap swimming, not socializing. Trunks with pockets so loaded with hardware that they drag when wet. Anything faded, fraying, or with a broken drawstring.
The Shirt: What to Wear Over the Swim Trunks
The shirt is where most men either get the pool party outfit right or lose it. The common mistake is wearing a shirt that’s either too formal for the setting or so casual it looks like sleepwear.
The linen short-sleeve shirt
The best option for a pool party in 2026.
A short-sleeve linen shirt in white, cream, light blue, or a soft stripe worn open over a plain t-shirt or directly over bare skin reads as effortlessly summer-appropriate without trying too hard.
Linen works near water because it dries quickly, it doesn’t cling when splashed, and it has a natural, unfussy quality that suits the setting. An open linen shirt communicates that you thought about the outfit without looking like you spent too much time on it.
The classic linen or cotton button-down
Same principle as above, in a long-sleeve version with the sleeves rolled up to the elbow. This is the slightly dressier version and works well for an evening pool party or a slightly more formal occasion — a bachelorette party the partner is invited to, a milestone birthday, or an adults-only evening event.
Rolled sleeves, two or three buttons undone, shirt worn open or loosely tucked. Simple.
The plain white t-shirt
The most casual of the three options, and still completely valid at a relaxed pool party. A good-quality plain white t-shirt in a fit that sits close without being tight looks clean and appropriate. Pair it with well-chosen trunks and good shoes, and it works.
The mistake is choosing a t-shirt that’s too oversized, too thin, or too old. A plain t-shirt that fits well looks intentional. One that doesn’t fit looks like an afterthought.
The rash guard
Practical, protective, and increasingly stylish. A fitted rash guard in a solid colour or subtle pattern offers sun protection, stays put in the water, and looks appropriate for an active pool party — one with games, volleyball, and hours of actual swimming.
Not the obvious choice for a more social, food-and-drinks-focused afternoon. The right choice for a party where you’re planning to be in the water most of the time.
What to avoid
Shirts that are too heavy or too structured for the setting — a formal button-down in a stiff fabric looks wrong next to a pool. Sleeveless shirts, unless you’re very comfortable in them. Graphic tees with slogans or large prints — they date quickly and rarely read well in photos.
Shoes: Simple, Flat, and Safe Near Water
The footwear rule for pool parties is the same for men as it is for women: nothing with any kind of heel or elevation near a wet pool deck. The surface is slippery, and pool physics are unkind to anyone who hasn’t dressed for them.
Leather or woven slides
The most current and consistently well-received pool party shoe for men in 2026. A clean leather or woven slide in tan, black, or white looks like you chose it deliberately rather than grabbing whatever was by the door.
Look for a flat sole with some grip rather than a completely smooth rubber bottom. A leather upper that can handle occasional splashing without being permanently damaged. A strap wide enough to actually support the foot rather than a minimal single-toe style that slips around.
Classic flip flops
Appropriate and practical, particularly at a more casual party. The caveat: quality flip flops in a neutral colour look significantly better than cheap foam ones from a gas station convenience store.
A simple Havaianas or similar in navy, black, or a clean white is a different visual category than a thick rubber slab.
White sneakers
For a pool party on a lawn or outdoor surface where you’re unlikely to be near the pool edge, white sneakers are a solid and stylish option. They don’t work on wet tile or near the pool — one splash and they’re done — but for the right setting, they look clean and current.
What to avoid
Anything with a heel or elevation of any kind. Sports trainers, unless the party is explicitly active. Dress shoes. Closed-toe shoes that take forever to dry and become uncomfortable when wet.
Accessories: The Small Details That Finish the Outfit
Men’s pool party accessories are best kept minimal and deliberate. Two or three things, chosen for their practicality as much as their appearance.
Sunglasses
The most important accessory and the one most likely to end up at the bottom of the pool. Wear the pair you’re comfortable losing or the pair with a float attachment — not the pair that costs more than your monthly groceries.
Aviator or classic wayfarer frames in tortoiseshell or black work for every pool party outfit and photograph well. Polarised lenses are practical near water and worth having.
A simple watch
A waterproof or water-resistant watch — rubber strap, stainless steel, or titanium — is both practical and a finished detail that elevates any pool party outfit. Not a dress watch. Not a smartwatch so expensive that you’ll be worried about it all afternoon.
A clean, simple sports watch in a neutral colour reads as quietly considered. It’s one of those details that people notice without knowing why the outfit looks more pulled-together.
A hat
A structured baseball cap in a solid neutral — navy, white, or olive — or a simple bucket hat works for a casual pool party. It provides genuine sun protection for anyone who’ll be outside for several hours.
The straw Panama hat is the dressier option and works well at a more stylized occasion or an evening party that starts late in the afternoon.
What to leave at home
Jewellery that reacts badly to chlorine. Anything with sentimental or financial value that could end up in the pool. A wallet, keys, and phone with no plan for where they go when you’re swimming.

Pool Party Outfits for Men by Occasion
The casual Saturday afternoon family party
Navy mid-thigh swim trunks, open white linen short-sleeve shirt, tan leather slides, classic sunglasses. Hair dealt with. SPF on before you leave the house.
This is the formula that works for most men at most pool parties. It requires minimal shopping if you already own decent trunks and a linen shirt; it photographs well all afternoon, and it’s appropriate from arrival through to whenever the party ends.
The adults-only evening pool party
Deep teal or olive swim trunks, white cotton button-down with sleeves rolled up, worn loosely open, leather slides, simple waterproof watch, clean sunglasses. A slight step up from the casual formula — the button-down and the watch do that work — without crossing into overdressed.
The themed party
Lean into it. For a Tropical Paradise theme: bright floral trunks in coral and green, a white linen shirt, and tan slides.
For a Retro 50s Lido: patterned trunks in a classic stripe, a white short-sleeve shirt tucked in, white canvas shoes, aviators.
The men who commit to a theme are always the ones who look the best in the photos. It costs nothing extra and adds significantly to the collective energy of the afternoon.
Attending a bachelorette pool party
Coordinate with whatever direction the group has been given. If the group is wearing a specific colour, a t-shirt or shirt in that colour over appropriate trunks is the minimum. If no direction has been given, a clean, simple outfit in neutrals is always correct.
The goal at a bachelorette party you’ve been invited to is to look like you made an effort and not to upstage anyone who’s there primarily to celebrate.
The host outfit
If you’re co-hosting a pool party, prioritize function. Trunks you’re genuinely comfortable swimming in, a shirt you can take on and off easily as you move between the pool, the kitchen, and the food table, and flat shoes that are comfortable for several hours of standing and moving.
Drew wears the same thing to every pool party we host: navy trunks, a white linen shirt, tan slides. It looks right every time, and he never has to think about it. That is exactly the energy a host needs.
The SPF Reminder
Sun protection at a pool party isn’t optional for anyone, men included. A broad-spectrum SPF 50 applied before you leave and reapplied every two hours in the sun is the one detail that makes the biggest difference to how the afternoon treats you.
A spray formula makes reapplication practical. A separate SPF for your face — a non-greasy mineral formula — takes 30 seconds and is worth doing every time.
